The Sharjah Sharia Court rejected a case lodged by a 25-year-old against her father for not allowing her to marry a US national.
She told the court that the father's refusal is because of religious reasons and she has tried to convince him.
The man proposed to her several times and even other people tried to change the mind of her father.
However, Advocate Ibrahim Alhosani said that according to Article 23 of Personal Affairs Law the father has the right to refuse the marriage.
Besides, father's consent is mandatory and he has to be present at the marriage.
The court observed that she cannot marry any man even if she is mature enough to choose a partner. Also, if the father is absent, the marriage will be considered void.
The woman told the court the man is well-educated and has an excellent job, but her father refused him on the basis of 'social status'.
The court ruled in favour of the father and dropped the case.- amira@khaleejtimes.com
