A huge fire broke out in the under-construction 60-floor Viceroy Tower in Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC) on Saturday afternoon. No injuries were reported, but eyewitnesses said construction workers were evacuated by the Dubai Civil Defence through shafts.
A tweet by the Dubai Media Office said: "Fire broke out at a building under construction in Jumeirah Village Circle. No injuries reported as @DCDDubai crews are extinguishing the blaze."
The fire engulfed the top floors of the upscale building, estimated to be worth Dh1.2billion. The fire was brought under control by around 6pm.
The tower is expected to be among Dubai's top destinations once completed in 2018.
SKAI, the Dubai-based real estate investment group, had announced last year that the tower was being upgraded to a five-star luxury property and rebranded as Viceroy Dubai Jumeirah Village following the signing of Viceroy Hotel Group as its hotel operator. It also said in a Press release issued last year that the tower was on track to become the first five-star property in a five-kilometre radius.
The tower was also awarded the 'Tall Buildings' prize at this year's Architectural Review MIPIM Future Projects Awards ceremony in Cannes, France.
It comprises 254 serviced apartments with their own private sky garden, 247 hotel guest rooms, 221 one-and two-bedroom apartments and 33 four-bedroom apartments with private pools.
SKAI representatives could not be reached for comments at the time of filing this report.
