The 'Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children' scheme has been revamped, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has announced.
The Indian government had launched this scheme in the academic year 2006-07 to assist children in pursuing undergraduate courses in Indian universities and institutes.
For the academic year 2016-17, the number of scholarships has been raised from 100 to 150 with introduction of 50 slots for children of Indian workers in the 17 Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries. Out of these 50 scholarships, one-third will be reserved for children who are pursuing studies in India.
The scheme is now applicable to four categories of applicants: Persons of Indian origin, non-resident Indians, children of Indian workers working in ECR countries and children of Indian workers in ECR countries studying in India.
The courses to choose from include engineering, architecture, technology, commerce, journalism, law, Ayurveda, agriculture, hotel management, humanities and nursing, among others.
Scholarship will be offered for pursuing courses in central universities, institutions accredited 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council and recognised by the University Grants Commission. Other institutions include National Institutes of Technology, Schools of Planning and Architecture and Indian Institutes of Information Technology.
Income criteria will be applicable to all categories of students. Accordingly, the total monthly income of the parent shall not exceed $2,250. The scholarship amount is given for payment of tuition fee, admission fee and post admission services including hostel fee but excluding food charges.
The scheme is applicable to NRIs and PIOs from 66 select countries. ECR countries are: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, the UAE and Yemen.
