Al Noor Training Centre for Persons with Disabilities in Dubai will organise a 'Unity Run' to celebrate the unity in diversity that the UAE cherishes.
The run, which will take place on November 25 at Al Mamzar Beach, is open to people from all backgrounds and all ages. The run is being held for the first time and is an inclusive un-timed 3km walk and a 7km run.
"I encourage everyone to run with them (people with special needs), not for them. We want to integrate our special needs members in society. This will motivate them and bring them closer to people with all abilities and will uplift their confidence. Through this, I just want to put across a simple message that everything is possible," said Ruth Dickson, managing partner, Fittgroup Middle East, who is one of the organisers of the run.
"To make this event a remarkable one, we are reaching out to special needs schools, centres and associations in the UAE to take part in the run. Registrations are open and have just started, but I want more and more people to join the force on November 25," she added, when asked how many participants have confirmed attendance.
Dubai aims to be a disabled-friendly city by 2020 and this run - in which visual- and mobility-impaired people will take part - will support the mission.
Ian Fairservice, vice-chairman of the board of Al Noor centre, said the run will not only raise awareness about special needs people in society, but will also help in raising funds for them.
Recalling the challenges the centre faced initially, he said: "After crossing all the hurdles in the beginning, we have reached this level, where we can give special needs persons at Al Noor the best possible therapies, work for their placements and make them independent. This initiative is a part of that as well. Next month we are celebrating the 35th year of this centre and are looking forward to celebrate many more years."
