Sharjah's remote areas will be lit to prevent crashes

Sharjah - As part of the project, the Sewa has completed installing 300 solar-powered street lights in Al Sajjah and Al Brashi areas. This project alone costs Dh5 million, according to Dr Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of Sewa.

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) recently launched a project to install street lights in remote areas. This will help prevent accidents involving vehicles and stray animals.
As part of the project, the Sewa has completed installing 300 solar-powered street lights in Al Sajjah and Al Brashi areas. This project alone costs Dh5 million, according to Dr Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of Sewa.
Speaking to Khaleej times, Al Leem said Sewa is keen to ensure energy saving, environment protection and safety and security for the residents.
"The lights which have been installed in these two areas are environment-friendly. The authority will complete the project by installing similar lights in all areas in the emirate," he said.
Al Leem said that installation of solar lights in Al Sajjah area came after a six-month study. When the project proved its efficiency in terms of energy saving, low cost and strong lights, Sewa decided to implement the project in Al Barashi area where 120 solar lights will be installed in the first phase.
He said that the project would also help factories, labour accommodations, warehouses and establishments in the area, as it would reduce their power consumption and ensure stability.
Al Leem stressed that the lighting projects would contribute to reducing traffic accidents caused due to lack of lighting on roads in remote areas. "Many accidents involving camels and stray animals are caused by lack of lighting on roads, as drivers fail to see the animals from a distance," he said.
