The Dubai Customs has launched a pair of innovative smart inspection glasses. The pioneering home-developed glasses are a big draw at the customs' stand at the ongoing Dubai International Government Achievements Exhibition (DIGAE) 2016.

Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Director of Dubai Customs, said this cutting-edge technology makes container inspections at customs checkpoints quicker and easier.

"The glasses instantly display the container's customs declaration, as well as its risk assessment and x-ray images on a one-stop little screen, and accordingly help inspectors take proper measures."

Mohammed Rashid Al Marri, team leader at Dubai Customs, exclusively told Khaleej Times on Tuesday that the smart glasses have significantly cut the time needed for inspection process "from two days to only two or three minutes".

"The smart inspection glasses are Google Glass which is equipped with a new software application that connects it straightaway with three customs sections for faster, safer and more accurate transactions."

For the time being, the Dubai Customs has bought three pieces, each of which costs Dh3,500.

Al Marri pointed out that the smart inspection glasses have resulted in a breakthrough in daily customs declarations, growing from 100 to over 1,000 per day.

"The two days needed to clear a customs transaction have become history with these glasses, which amazingly connect the customs inspection, declaration and x-ray sections, and do the job in two to three minutes. "The Google glass we are using consists of an HD camera, Bluetooth, along with motion gesture, voice command option, and other features," he elaborated.

The other customs initiatives showcased at the exhibition include the Virtual Corridor, Smart Enterprise Capability, Enterprise Case Management and Smart Workspace, Al Marri said.
