Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, inaugurated the new building of Abu Dhabi Malayalee Samajam in Mussafah on Friday night.
Shaikh Nahyan said the Indian association, founded in 1969, is older than the UAE.
"This testifies the importance of the Kerala community in the development of the country," he said after opening the building. "They were here to celebrate the founding of the UAE in 1971 by our nation's founder, the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan," he said.
"The development of this centre mirrors closely with that of Abu Dhabi City and the UAE. I trust you had a supremely happy Onam. This facility will support a renewed sense of community activity."
Addressing a largely Keralite crowd, he said: "Kerala is the most literate and socially-developed state in India. You have made a unique contribution to the peace and prosperity of the UAE."
Samajam president Yesuseelan B. elaborated on how he raised funds for the building. He thanked each and every patron, who helped with the building. Chief patron MA Yousuf Ali said the building was a collective effort.
"I remember in 1970s, the association had a tent-like structure in Madinat Zayed. And to be here in a building with such facilities is a great thing," added the managing director of EMKE LuLu Group.
The building houses a main hall, mini-hall, library and conference room. It also has badminton courts and playing area for children.
