Are you a bit of a monster before you've had your coffee in the morning? Dubai boasts no dearth of speciality coffees or coffee houses (the city's concern for keeping monsters off the streets is touching that way), but maybe you haven't tried them all.

Here's listing five of the most popular caffeinated drinks - with bestsellers from around town - to help you get your mojo on.

Espresso

This strong black coffee forms the basis for many other popular coffees. Timing is key in its preparation, since getting it wrong will result in coffee that's either too acidic or too watery. If you like it more acidic though, try RAW Coffee Company in Al Manara - they roast their own beans, so it doesn't get fresher than that!

Café Latte

A much sweeter drink than an espresso, this one uses steamed milk and micro foam and is a go-to for many coffee lovers around the world. % Arabica serves an incredible Spanish latte, The Brass Coffee & Community at City Walk has a signature lavender honey latte that you are sure to rave about, and Hampton's Café's rose latte is the perfect way to start your day.

Cappuccino

Similar to a latte, this one involves more foam and some chocolate powder or cinnamon on top. Some baristas may also opt to swap out the milk for cream instead. Tim Horton's Iced Cappuccino is one of their most popular drinks for a reason, Boxpark's Cioccolat Italiani has a chocolate cappuccino to die for, and the Culinary Boutique in Jumeirah offers a lavender-infused cappuccino that is a bestseller.

Macchiato

The name means 'marked'. The macchiato is essentially an espresso, marked with steamed milk and foam. Consider it a good compromise for those who want something between an espresso and a cappuccino. Pappa Roti is well known for their macchiatos (you can even ask the barista to do a Hello Kitty design for you, instead of the usual hearts or leaves). There's also Godiva Café, where you can sip on a caramel macchiato for your own taste of coffee heaven.

Frappuccino

This may be a trademarked line of coffee beverages from Starbucks but it deserves a mention on this list nonetheless. Consisting of ice, chilled espresso, milk and sugar, the famous coffee house has a variety of flavoured frappes. You can't go wrong with a white mocha or caramel crunch or mocha cookie crumble or Java Chip. Let's just say you can't go wrong with one.
