UAE's greatest achievement in 2016: Dubai Water Canal

On November 9th, a long-awaited dream came true in Dubai: the Dubai Water Canal was finally inaugurated.

Innovation was the name of the game for the UAE in 2016. There are many reasons to cheer the year and we have picked out 10. Part 9 of a 10-part series takes you back to November 9 when the much awaited Dubai Water Canal was opened to the public who got one more entertainment spot.
On November 9th, a long-awaited dream came true in Dubai: the Dubai Water Canal was finally inaugurated.
The 12-kilometre waterway that connects Dubai Creek with the Arabian Gulf was built at a cost of Dh3.7 billion, and will eventually feature a number of tourist attractions, developed by Dubai Holding. Additionally, Dubai Holding will eventually build up the span of the promenade - the longest in the UAE - to feature water homes, floating restaurants, retail outlets and five palm-tree lined marinas, as well as the region's first purpose-built yachting destination with floating restaurants and cafes. The development's residential units, which will be on water and accessible by boats, will soon provide one of the most unique "lifestyle propositions" in the world.
"Every achievement and success that we celebrate motivates us to move ahead with confidence, determination and optimism," said His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai at the inauguration of the canal.
"We are challenging ourselves to generate the best ideas and initiatives. Our progressive way of thinking, ambition and positive energy will bring happiness to the people and prosperity to the nation."
Like many of the most important days of 2016, the opening of the canal is will continue to be significant because it will remain as something for future generations to enjoy and develop further.
By 2020, for example, the number of people using marine ferries on the canal is expected to top one million per year, which will go up to four million per year by 2030.
"It is an important milestone that will enhance the lives of the residents and visitors. This landmark project realises the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to create a fabric of social networks and family friendly oriented developments," said Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, chairman and CEO of the Meydan Group.
"The project will improve the overall connectivity of the city and stitches together the old and the new, further strengthening Dubai as a global centre for tourism, leisure and trade."
