Two men crashed their car into a police patrol and assaulted officers who tried to arrest them for consuming drugs, the Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Sunday.
The Emirati men, aged 44 and 20, tried to drive away when the police patrol approached them in Al Quoz for consuming illegal substances. They crashed into the patrol and refused to get out of the car when the officers managed to restrict their movement. Officers had to smash open the vehicle's window to arrest the defendants.
A lieutenant had told prosecutors that he learnt the 44-year-old defendant possessed drugs. After arresting the defendants, the police found drugs in the vehicle. When confronted by the police, they both denied consuming or possessing drugs.
Tests showed traces of illegal substances in the urine of the 20-year-old defendant, while the other defendant refused to undergo a urine test.
Both defendants have been charged with assault and possessing illegal substances. At the court on Sunday, the 20-year-old defendant admitted to the charges, while the other denied them.
