Among the certain factors that Dubai residents can relate to is the pain and muscle tension experienced by day-end due to prolonged office and driving hours.
That's when people become grateful for women like Florencia Crisostomo, massage therapist, who knows just what her clients need.
"When my colleagues ask me to teach them certain massage techniques, I tell them that I give different kinds of massages depending on what my client need. Each case is different," said the 41-year-old Filipino, who works at Feet First Reflexology and Massage Centre.
Crisostomo came to Dubai in February 2015 to pursue her career as a massage therapist. She's been in the field for the past 22 years.
Living with her cousins, she said she never felt homesick in Dubai.
"Life is really good here, I have never been homesick because there are a lot of things to do. I still miss home obviously, but I enjoy living and working here," said Crisostomo, noting that her family and friends always keep her company.
She noted that the best thing she loves about her job is meeting new people every day.
"You get to learn something new from every individual as you come in touch with different cultures. I have loads of clients who come back for me as well, so they become my friends!"
What makes Crisostomo stand out is the way she customises her massage techniques for every person.
"I love it when my clients tell me they feel great after my massage or that I know exactly what they need and where their pains are."
She noted: "I'm always specific with my massage techniques, and they like different styles."
Working for 10-12 hours a day, Crisostomos learned with time how to conserve energy. "Upbeat! We get used to it and we try to take breaks in between before we get to the next client.
Asked about what she does if she needs a massage herself, Crisostomo laughed and said, "When I need a massage, I ask my colleagues. We give each other short massages during our breaks."
And the most common problem she finds among her Dubai clients? Unsurprisingly, tensed backs.
"People experience pain from the neck down the lower back because they are either sitting in an office or running around with their laptops," said Crisostomos.
She also noted the phenomenon of having teenage visitors experiencing back pain due to heavy bags and bending over laptops for long hours.
Crisostomos advises people to take short breaks during their working hours. "If you cannot leave your desk, try to stretch and move your muscles because putting your neck and back in one position is really bad."
