The Dubai Municipality has introduced a smart inspection system that will allow consumers to monitor their own food commodities and Halal products.
The civic body launched the smart food safety system as a track and trace technology that guarantees authenticity of goods and their conformity to standards of certification and accreditation.
A mobile app - DM Smart Traceability Solution that will be available for download on iOS and Android platforms in the next six months - will enable consumers to scan goods themselves to confirm relevant product information and detect potential violations.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of the Dubai Municipality, said the initial application phase will target five-gallon water bottles in 35 companies in Dubai.
"We received many complaints about refilling water bottles more than the allowed number of times. The new solution will make sure bottles are not used beyond 35 times with new caps. It will monitor safety of the container and trace the use of caps through smart labeling and laser engraving," said Lootah. "In the beginning, it was difficult to track the process, but the new solution is launched to make sure the product is safe for users."
The new system will apply to the existing 500,000 types of certified products in Dubai that follow public health requirements. Lootah stressed that the smart system will not add extra cost to products.
He said that the smart traceability leaves no room for cheating or dodging the rules.
