His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, named Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri as the commander-in-chief of Dubai Police on Wednesday.
He succeeds the late Lt-Gen Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, who died of a heart attack in November last year. Sheikh Mohammed promoted Al Marri from brigadier to the rank of major-general on Tuesday.
Al Marri, who will now head the 15,000-member-strong Dubai Police force, said his promotion (from brigadier to major-general) and his appointment (as the Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police), reflected the invaluable trust of the prudent leadership.
"This exceptional honour does pose a big responsibility (on my shoulders), and I can only ask Almighty Allah to help me fulfil my duties in the best possible way."
Thanking Sheikh Mohammed for honouring and appointing him as the Dubai Police chief, Al Marri said: "This trust and confidence placed in me (by the leadership) is an obligation of sorts to work harder and exert my utmost effort to secure and ensure the safety and security of this country."
Praising the new police chief via Twitter, Sheikh Mohammed said Maj-Gen Al Marri is of outstanding character in terms of leadership and expertise in the field of security. He said the new chief will be a valuable addition to the nation's security leaders.
Lt-Gen Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chief of Police and Public Security in Dubai, thanked Sheikh Mohammed for his decision and confidence in Emirati future leaders.
The new police chief said that he would be up to the responsibility, and would always strive to be a role model for his colleague leaders, officers, and other police staffers in ensuring the safety, security and happiness of each and every individual on this country.
"This is to confirm that I shall continue the over 60-year-old mission founded and bolstered by Lt-Gen Dhahi Khalfan Tamim and shall preserve the high-ranking position of the Dubai Police worldwide and make it a shining example for all law enforcement bodies across the globe."
Maj-Gen Al Marri further expressed his deep appreciation to all his former Dubai Police leaders, and pledged to continue the mission of giving laid down by the late Dubai Police Chief Al Mazeina.
"They have all supported me since I first joined the Dubai Police, and have always encouraged my tireless efforts that have made me eligible for this honourable position."
Maj-Gen Al Marri has previously worked as deputy director of the General Department of Protective Security and Emergency of the Dubai Police, and Maj-Gen Abdul Rahman Rafee, Assistant Commander in chief of the Dubai Police for community service, called Maj-Gen Al Marri "the right person for the right position".
