A 32-year-old Asian maid died in her sleep on Thursday morning in Dubai - because of a rat.
A gas cylinder exploded in her employer's villa after a rat tampered with the cylinder, causing the wall - adjacent to the maid's room - to collapse.
An official from the Dubai Civil Defence explained that the gas cylinder tube in the kitchen was damaged after the mouse gnawed on it.
On smelling the gas leak, the owner alerted the maid and warned her not to turn on the stove or electricity, but the servant ignored him and entered the kitchen, igniting one of the burners, which lead to a fire accompanied by an explosion that damaged the kitchen walls.
The explosion caused one of the walls to fall on the other maid, who was sleeping in the next room.
The maid died immediately, succumbing to her injuries.
The civil defense immediately rushed to the site of the incident after receiving a call in the morning at 6 am.
They doused the fire and removed the maid's body from under the debris.
A Dubai Civil Defence said that rodents pose a great danger because they cause damage to pipes, which lead to gas leakage, in turn causing such tragedies.
This is not the first case where rats have caused a gas leak.
