The Sharjah Sharia Court of First Instance has acquitted a clearance official from being party to smuggling.
The presiding judge, Dr Yaqoub Al Hamadi, acquitted the Asian who works in Port Khalid in Sharjah and was accused for passing a shipment from India that contains psychotropic substances. The Asian, during the court hearing, insisted and pleaded not guilty to the charge of aiding in the smuggling of tramadol in a shipment from India.
He told the judge that he did not know what the goods in the container were. He said, according to the papers submitted to him, the shipment contained creams and other cosmetics. He said his work is to just provide the customs delivery permit and that he was surprised when police officials told him about the existence of drugs.
The lawyer of the accused said the official is innocent and that he was shocked when he was told that the contents of the shipment evoked suspicion.
The lawyer said this fear and confusion were natural and it would happen to anyone in such cases. Such fear does not constitute evidence to convict him nor does it show his involvement with the drug issue, the lawyer said.
The lawyer presented his defense to the presiding judge and requested the court to acquit his client.
The case has been adjourned for ruling on August 28.
