The family of a 3-year-old boy, who received serious burns after an Indonesian maid allegedly poured drainage acid on him, has called for imposing the strictest punishment on the defendant.
The Sharjah Shariah Court has adjourned the case to October 20 to review the forensic report.
Salem bin Sahooh, who is the family's lawyer, said the court is yet to determine whether the maid poured the acid on the boy accidentally or on purpose.
The housemaid, who is in her 40s, has denied the charges, saying the child poured the acid on himself. The boy, Omar, received burns on his face, hands, legs and stomach.
The incident was reported in March this year in Al Ramaqiyah area. The boy's mother told Khaleej Times he is still in a very serious condition. He has been undergoing treatment in Germany for the past six months, she said.
Recalling the incident, she said she had asked the maid to wash Omar's hand as he had been playing with paint. After the maid took Omar to the bathroom, the mother heard her son's screams and rushed to the bathroom.
He was taken to the Qasimi Hospital, where doctors said he suffered third degree burns.
Omar was adopted by the family when he was four months old.
The mother said the maid had been working with the family for four years.
The Sharjah Public Prosecution said the maid admitted that the attack was premeditated.
