An absconding maid, who allegedly ran away with two mobile phones belonging to her sponsor's family, was caught after she tried to board the metro without a ticket, the Court of First Instance heard on Thursday.
The 26-year-old maid, from Uganda, has been charged with workplace theft.
The maid's sponsor's brother, a 26-year-old Egyptian, said that at around 11 am on August 27, he noticed that the housemaid had left their house.
"About one hour later, I got a phone call from a policewoman at the metro station of Abu Bakr Al Siddiq Street, telling me that the maid was caught with a stolen phone," the Egyptian man told the prosecutor.
He said that the phone was used by his family members and was always left on the table in the main hall of their house.
At 3 pm on the same day, the sponsor's family received another phone call from the police at the station.
"We learned that the maid was caught after she tried to take the metro without having a ticket," he said.
The witness added that two stolen mobile phones with their SIM cards were recovered from the maid.
"I looked for my father's mobile phone but could not find it, after which I found out the maid had stolen it," he said during the investigation.
The trial has been adjourned to November 7.
