In a bid to celebrate the works of French-Polish physicist and chemist Marie Curie and Egyptian 'father of femtochemistry' Ahmed Zewail, chemistry makes a comeback at the fourth annual Nobel Exhibition.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) announced the fourth annual Nobel Exhibition, organised in collaboration with the Nobel Foundation. Set to take place at City Walk, from February 4 until March 3, the exhibition bears the theme 'Nobel Prize in Chemistry - Connecting Elements'.
This year, the event highlights an important category of the Nobel Prize- chemistry. The exhibition will focus on the achievements of Arab and Muslim chemists, who played a vital role in establishing the foundations of this branch of science.
Speaking at the museum in City Walk on Sunday, February 4, MBRF CEO Jamal bin Huwaireb told Khaleej Times that the exhibition is part of a 10-year strategic partnership between MBRF and the Nobel Foundation. He said: "The annual exhibition encourages the youth to embrace innovation and creativity and become active players in the development of their societies and a part of the knowledge industry."
Visitors at the exhibition will enjoy the opportunity to enjoy discoveries made by Nobel Prize laureates, including Arab scientists such as ?the late Egyptian chemist Ahmed Zewail. Huwaireb added: "The exhibition is especially targeted for school students and teachers as the interactive museum include several workshops, activities, and programmes."
Dr Olov Amelin, director of the Nobel Museum in Sweden, said: "The theme of this year's exhibition underlines the role chemistry can play in addressing problems such as climate change or how to cure cancer. Our aim is to eventually make the exhibition a travelling one. This year, after Dubai, the exhibition will move to Egypt, and hopefully to Jordan. We're also looking at Indonesia and Malaysia."
The exhibition includes several weekly workshops, featuring experts and specialists from the Nobel Foundation and international universities. The workshops will give insight to the Zewail City of Science and Technology, as well as Ahmed Zewail's achievements in chemistry and the criteria for selecting the Nobel Prize winners.
The event also includes several Chemistry shows, where families and children can take part in chemical experiments, whetting their appetite for discovery. In addition to that, MBRF's 'Esterahat Sayedat' will organise a Ladies Book Club during the event to discuss chemistry-focused publications.
Nobel Prize Series
The officials also explained that the foundation will organise a teachers' conference in Dubai in October 2018. The foundation just completed the Nobel Prize Series in Goa, India, and the Dubai conference will be similar, revealed Huwaireb and Dr Amelin. Huwai-reb said: "We're expecting participation from about 2,000 teachers for the conference. The event will educate teachers and students about the Nobel system."
Dr Amelin added: "The point of this summit is to educate teachers that not all Nobel laureates were brilliant in the classroom. We want them to recognise and encou-rage the passion that they may have for a particular field of study."
