An Asian woman - a maid by profession - who stole US$272,286 (around Dh1 million) and jewellery from an Ajman flat - which apparently belonged to her relative - has been arrested.
Major Ahmed Saeed Al Nuaimi, deputy director of Ajman Police criminal investigation department, said that the flat owner - also an Asian - informed the police that his house had been robbed. He told the cops that the safe deposit box which contained Dh945,500 worth of cash and gold worth Dh150,000 had been stolen.
"As soon as we received the robbery information, a team was formed and probe launched. The watchman of the flat said that he saw a woman coming out of a taxi and entering the building, holding a safe deposit box. She left the box at the entrance while going in. After some time, he saw the same woman coming out of the building holding a box that was covered with a piece of cloth. She hailed a taxi and disappeared. Investigations revealed that the woman was an Afghan national in her 20s and resided in Sharjah."
The police raided the house of the woman and arrested her.
Major Al Nuaimi added that during interrogation, she confessed to stealing the safe deposit box. She revealed that the owner of the targeted house was her relative. She planned to carry out the theft in the flat after ensuring that he was away during the robbery.
"The suspect confessed that she had the keys of her relative's house. She said she had planned to replace the safe deposit box kept in the house with a similar one she bought. By doing so, the house owner wouldn't have noticed any changes, she felt. However, she failed to carry the box she bought inside the owner's house as it was too heavy and left it at the entrance. After robbing the valuables from the house, she immediately headed to her home with the stolen stuff."
After her confession, the suspect was detained and will be referred to the public prosecution.
