If she wins, her teacher wins too!
Teachers don't expect much from their students after they graduate, but one lucky educator will receive $50,000 if his former student wins a global science competition.
As part of the Breakthrough Prize, computer science teacher at the International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi Yayha Naser was chosen as the person who inspired his student in science technology.
Ayesha Ahmed is one of the top 29 semi-finalists in the Mark Zuckerberg-funded Breakthrough Challenge Junior, where she can win $250,000 scholarship money, her teacher will receive $50,000 and her school will win a $100,000-worth new science lab.
Naser, who has been teaching at the International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi for 32 years, said he is thrilled to be chosen as the teacher who inspired Ahmed.
"She is a very bright student, in love with technology. She always took part in the school science fairs. She even programmed a robot hand. And the school encourages these kinds of activities," the Jordanian teacher said.
"I'm very happy that she chose me as the teacher that inspired her. I have a son in university, so the money can help us in that. I always encourage students to be innovative and Ayesha never hesitated in coming to me if she had any questions."
Naser also said if the school receives the new state-of-the-art science lab, it would mean "great things" for the students and the school.
"If we get the school lab, it will be very helpful and beneficial for all of the students. It will encourage them to learn the subject more," he said.
