An Arab man is challenging a ruling that found him guilty of drug use - and running away from the police.
Court records showed that when the police found evidence that the man consumed drugs, an officer tried to stop him on a street. However, he ran away. And when the cop started chasing him, they both accidentally fell into a manhole on the roadside but no one was hurt.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance earlier sentenced him to a month in jail and fined him Dh10,000 after he was found guilty of consuming drugs and resisting arrest.
As he stood trial at the Abu Dhabi Appeal Court, the Arab man denied using drugs and stressed that he was wrongly convicted.
In a recent hearing, the defendant's father told the court that his son suffered from a psychological trauma which resulted from a road accident that happened more than a year ago.
He said his son suffered serious injuries and fell into a month-long coma after the crash.
When he was discharged from the hospital, he was given prescription drugs for depression and psychological problems, the father added. He also presented documents from the hospital to support his claims.
The trial was adjourned to June 25.
