A massive fire broke out on Thursday morning on Lulu Island, a man-made island off the coast of Abu Dhabi.
Residents saw thick black smoke rising from across the corniche in what appeared to be a "huge fire."
"I can see huge plumes of smoke from my office building on the corniche. It looks like a big one," an Abu Dhabi resident told Khaleej Times.
Though the cause of the fire is not yet known, official sources said there were no casualties as the fire spread through vegetated areas of the island.
Eye witnesses said they saw the rising smoke from 11am.
"I spotted the fire around 11.30am. Then it started spreading as was evident from the expanding smoke blanket over the sky," said another resident who lives on the corniche.
Some residents have also tweeted images and videos of the fire showing enormous black cloud enveloping the sky.
Motorists who drove through corniche were seen slowing down to check out the black cloud of smoke veiling the corniche sky.
"It does not look like a small fire. The flames could be seen from as far away as my office tower on the corniche," said Yousef Malik, a resident.
Helicopters were seen patrolling the site by late afternoon, and civil defence has closed down access to the island.
Lulu Island stretches from Abu Dhabi breakwaters to the Zayed sea port.
