Girls compete with each other; but women empower one another. And there was no better display of this than at the GR8 Women Awards 2016 Middle East, that took place on Saturday evening at Sofitel The Palm Resort & Spa Dubai. The annual awards, currently in its 6th edition, initiated by Anu and Shashi Ranjan, drew some of the most influential women from across the region. Hosted by the dapper Indian television actor Rohit Roy and local television presenter Rahaf Altawil, the event which started pretty late (is it just us or has it become the trend of late to have events begin much later than the time mentioned in the invites?), suffered from some technical glitches, probably understandable, considering it is a televised event.
The award function which saw the presence of many Arab and Asian achievers, was also high on the entertainment factor with a dance recital by television actress Prachi Shah interspersed with a fashion show. Among the highlights of the evening was also the debut performance of Wedding Pulao actress Anushka Ranjan.
It was commendable to see a lot of men in the gathering (and this despite the highly exciting India-Pakistan match going on) who seemed more than happy to cheer on their women from the sidelines. So do you need a special day to commemorate the women in your life? Definitely not. But as the GR8 Women Awards 2016 Middle East, showed, it always helps to have a platform where women from various fields can be brought together - to acknowledge their contribution to society and help bring awareness to the wider world about the special role played by women in the larger society around them.
As one of the winners rightly pointed out: Girls compete with each other; but women empower one another.
