Students Collect 4,000 Books in Literacy Drive for Afghanistan
DUBAI — Two students from Jumeirah College led an appeal that resulted in 4,000 books being collected for a girl’s school and a literacy centre in Afghanistan.
The “A book a day will give them a say!” campaign initiated by the students initially targeted 1,000 books for the cause but were supported by samaritans of the Rashid School for Boys, who donated 1,200 books.
“The campaign aims to provide young people like ourselves in Afghanistan the chance to become active members of the community,” said Christina Patronis, student of Jumeirah College.
“The children there, especially young girls, are in desperate need for the world’s support in gaining access to English books, as they continue to suffer from the ravages of war.”
This is the first time that the two school student councils have worked in collaboration and its success has inspired them to join forces for other community projects in the coming year.
