Shushilil Azam Shuib, Counsellor (Education) MEPC, Dubai Education speaks to Khaleej Times about educational promotional programmes in a bid to attract international students from the region for studies in Malaysian institutions. Herewith are excerpts from the interview:
Shushilil Azam Shuib
Counsellor (Education) MEPC, Dubai

How much of a presence does Malaysian Higher Education have in the Middle east and particularly in the UAE?

A: If we compare with other traditional education providing nations, Malaysia started to promote its education sector just a few years ago in the Middle East. But through our promotional programmes, we established ourselves as one of the best destinations for higher education. The number of students seeking Malaysian institutions for various study programmes have been increasing in recent years, this clearly explains our presence and parents’ trust in our institutions.
What are your plans on enhancing this to include more international affiliate programmes?
A: We undertake many promotional programmes to expose our universities and colleges in this region. Some of the important activities are: participating in international exhibitions and advertisements in local media.
The number of Middle Eastern applicants for higher education in Malaysia has shown a marked increase over the years. What factors do you attribute to this sudden increase?
A: There are many reasons for increasing number of Middle East students at Malaysian institutions. I think following are most important ones.
•World class education
•Internationally recognised study programmes
•Affordable study and living costs
•Twining study options with institutions from UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, etc.
Why would a Middle Eastern candidate with so much scope here, choose Malaysia as an option for their higher education?
A: As I mentioned earlier, there are number of reasons why Middle Eastern students still prefer our institutions. Namely, large number of study options, more than 400 institutions to choose from, twining facilities with world renowned Universities, affordable study and living expenses, etc.
What is the feedback that you have received from Malaysian candidates who have attended and graduated in the Middle East?
A: Large number of Malaysian students study Islamic related courses degree programmes and Arabic language courses in the Middle East. Their feedback after graduation is very positive in terms of programme contents and instructors.
Your message to the youngsters in Malaysia who plan on pursuing higher education here in the Middle East?
A: We generally do not restrict our students to seek for foreign institutions for further studies, but our advice is to search for well-established universities.
