IT HAS BEEN a woeful week for Ranjith's new movie Leela, starring Biju Menon. While the box office initials have been good, the film got its first hit from the critics and later from online pirates. Not surprisingly, Ranjith and writer R Unni are unhappy. They have approached the authorities for prompt action against the pirated versions of the movie.
Unni has been equally vociferous about how the film's fair chance was spoiled by 'paid critics' and alleges that vested interests were at play to tarnish the film and its prospects. He says he has first-hand knowledge of how critics were offered money to write negative reviews.
And negative reviews were not the only challenge though. The film is facing the ire of the morality brigade, in a possible scenario of missing the forest for the trees.
On the plus side, the film has come as a career-best for Biju Menon. The actor brings out a nuanced performance - especially in the subtle moments that escaped the attention of critics.
