Kalam’s message

/ 14 November 2013

I happened to participate in the seminar organized by DC Books on the theme the Birth of an Author in You where Dr APJ Abdul Kalam gave the keynote address.

Dr Kalam and other authors encouraged the audience to read, with Dr Kalam especially discussing the reading habits of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. Reading good books helps us acquire knowledge, is good entertainment and helps cope with the challenges we come across in life.
In his book My Journey: Transforming Dreams into Actions, Dr Kalam recollects the loss of his father’s boat during a cyclone, saying: “Knowing that there is a larger energy and force than can crush our ambitions and plans in the blink of an eye… the only way to survive is to face your troubles and rebuild your life.”

This sentence would inspire me and strengthen me if I am ever in such a situation.

I also recollect an earlier speech by Dr Kalam when he said: “Where there is righteousness in the heart there is beauty in the character, when there is beauty in the character there is harmony in the home, when there is harmony in the home there is order in the nation, when there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world.”

Let us cultivate the reading habit in our children, which will assure not only their future but the bright future of the whole world.
