Preparations underway for National Day celebrations

(Staff Report) / 8 November 2012

DUBAI — The Dubai Committee for celebrations of the National Day held its periodic meeting to discuss the developments on the arrangements for marking the 41st UAE National Day.

The meeting held at Emirates Towers, the headquarters of the Dubai Executive Council, discussed the main events which the committee will organise, as well as the programmes of the government entities in the emirate.

Other issues reviewed include the promotion and media campaign which will coincide with the celebrations and the festive look and decorations the emirate will have.  The committee coordinated with the entities on the use of the National Day Logo and the rules of using it in accordance with the directives of the National Day Federal Committee.

Government entities which took part in the meeting said they would mobilise all resources to mark the day as it is an opportunity to renew their loyalty to the country.  The celebrations this year revolve around the theme, ‘Spirit of the Union’, which reflects the concept of unity which links the country under one flag.  The logo is based on the vision of the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, taken forward by the sagacious leadership of today.  All preparations are in place to ensure that Dubai gets a festive aura. The meeting was attended by the members of the committee which comprise the general secretariat of the Dubai Executive council, Dubai Police, Roads and Transport Authority, Culture and Arts Authority in Dubai, Knowledge and Human Development Authority and Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment.

The meeting was held within the framework of the comprehensive coordination on the events of celebrating the National Day with the Federal Committee, which comprises representatives of the seven emirates, with Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and community development as its chairman.

National Day is celebrated on December 2 in the UAE for two days or more. It marks the UAE’s formal independence from the British colonial rule and the eventual unification of the seven emirates in 1971, which together form the modern-day country.

People celebrate this day with flags and drawings on their faces. The locals also do a “Maseera”, in which people go on the road and drive around the Emirate in celebration with music, poems, and many, many flags.

Schools in the UAE celebrate the National Day by holding national events and celebrations where students dress up in the cultural “thoub” and “kandoora” and perform the “youlah” and folkloric dances and organise cultural contests. news@khaleejtimes.com
