Journalist and Putin critic murdered in Ukraine

Kiev - In his columns for the outlet Sheremet was critical of both Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

A car bombing in central Kiev killed renowned journalist Pavel Sheremet on Wednesday in the latest deadly attack on a reporter in Ukraine.
From its turbulent lurch from Communism to capitalism after the collapse of the Soviet Union to the upheaval of the 2014 pro-EU Maidan revolution and subsequent pro-Russian insurgency, journalists in the country have often found themselves in the crosshairs.

The brutal murder of leading independent journalist Giorgi Gongadze, 31, in 2000 still haunts Ukraine.
Georgian-born Gongadze set up the prominent website Ukrainska Pravda and became a thorn in the side of then President Leonid Kuchma with his reporting into high-level graft.
Gongadze failed to return to his home in Kiev on September 16, 2000 and his decapitated body was discovered two months later ditched in a forest and doused with chemicals. Suspicions focused on Kuchma after a recording emerged purporting to contain him discussing ways to shut Gongadze up.
Four men have been found guilty of carrying out the hit - including ex-police commander Oleksiy Pukach in 2013 - but no one has ever been charged with ordering the murder.
Veremiy, a journalist for the Kiev-based Vesti newspaper, was gunned down by unknown assailants at the height of anti-government protests in central Kiev on 18 February 2014.
Reports said Veremiy, 32, was shot in the chest after attackers stopped a taxi he was travelling in with a colleague and beat the two journalists with baseball bats.
As with the killing of more than 100 protesters during the 2014 Maidan uprising in the Ukraine capital, no one has been found guilty. Veremiy's paper has pointed the finger of blame at so-called Titushki, hired pro-government thugs who infiltrated the protests.
Pro-Russian journalist and blogger Oles Buzyna was shot dead in a playground outside his home in Kiev on April 16 2015. Buzyna, 45, was a critic of the new pro-Western government in the country and his death sparked fierce condemnation from Moscow.
His slaying came during a wave of killings and suspicious deaths of officials linked the former ruling party of ousted president Viktor Yanukovych.
Two Ukrainian nationalists were arrested over Buzyna's death but released after several months and the investigation has now ground to a halt.
Prominent pro-Western journalist Pavel Sheremet, 44, was killed in a car bombing in central Kiev on July 20 2016. A Belarussian-born Russian citizen, Sheremet had worked for Ukrainska Pravda since quitting Russia in 2014 in protest at Moscow's handling of the crisis in Ukraine.
Sheremet was reportedly driving the car of Ukrainska Pravda editor Olena Prytula when he died. In his columns for the outlet Sheremet was critical of both Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
He had earlier received international recognition for his fierce stance against Belarussian strongman President Alexander Lukashenko and had worked as a journalist in Russia for state-owned TV channels.
