Four-year-old Jessica Whelan from Lancashire whose poignant black and white photo went viral passed away on Sunday morning following a 13-month battle with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma. The announcement was made by her father Andrew on Sunday evening on a Facebook page that chronicles Jessica's illness.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Jessica was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma on 23 September 2015.
Andrew shared a photo of his daughter crying in pain on Facebook. This photograph went viral.
The Oxford Dictionary defines neuroblastoma is a malignant tumour composed of neuroblasts, most commonly in the adrenal gland. A neuroblast is an embryonic cell from which nerve fibres originate.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Neuroblastoma most commonly affects children age 5 or younger, though it may rarely occur in older children.
