Kota in Rajasthan is famous for its coaching centers. Students from all over India who like to take a shot at engineering and IIT examinations go through the grueling academic sessions in Kota. 17-year-old Kalpit  Veerval, whose father is a nurse and whose mother is a school teacher in Udaipur, Rajasthan, has scored 100% in all subjects in his JEE ( Joint Entrance Examination) mains: 360/360.
He studied mostly by himself, but was guided by a local coaching institute in Udaipur. The Kota coaching centers would this year miss an opportunity to be endorsed in media ads by the JEE Mains top scorer.
When the congratulatory call came on Thursday from the chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kalpit was his usual composed self. He seemed to be expecting  good news. "Kalpit is  a genius," one of his school mates said. "He has already topped Indian Junior Science Olympiad in 2013, and the National Talent Search Examination in 2014."
Kalpit is from a lower middle class family, and is a Dalit, which technically means he is entitled to the official reservation quota. Accordingly, he had appeared for the JEE examination under the Scheduled Caste category. But he did so well, he topped across all categories, and headed the list of merit.
His father, Pushpendra Veerval, is naturally overjoyed: " Kalpit's mother and I are very proud. He would wake up at 6 am every day, and start studying. Then he would attend school and his coaching classes, take a break after 5pm, and then resume studies. He studies every day for 17 hours."
Despite his punishing schedule, Kalpit enjoys a game of badminton, and listens to Coldplay. He said he started studying seriously for JEE only in class 11. "I wanted to stay away from Kota and its pressures, be in charge of my own schedule," Kalpit said. He is waiting for his class 12 examination results. Naturally, he expects no surprises here, too.  He is keen on an admission to an IIT. The entrance examination for that falls on May 21.
Kalpit is the first student to score 100%  in the JEE (Mains).
