A 19-year-old university undergraduate was convicted of sexual assault for touching a schoolgirl's arm and waist while 'trying to talk to her' in the street.
Jamie Griffiths, has been ordered to pay £250 (Dh1,000 approx) to his victim, then 17, and complete  a 12-month community order with 200 hours' unpaid work and sign the Sex Offenders' Register for the next five years.
According to reports in Daily Mail, Griffiths had Googled 'how to make a friend' before approaching the girl who as she walked to and from school.
Manchester Magistrates charged Griffiths with two charges of sexual assault against girl who was due to sit her mock A-Level exams. The court heard that the girl, a would-be Oxford student, burst into tears when Griffiths touched her the second time, and went to police.
The teenage girl said the encounter caused her mental trauma and she was unable to sit her mock exams, and her application process to Oxford University was hindered.
In a statement to police, she said: "I felt extremely anxious in the following weeks, often breaking down into tears. I was completely unable to walk anywhere by myself without being overcome by fear."
Griffiths, who lives with his parents in a £650,000 house in the affluent town of Knutsford, Cheshire, faced a potential jail sentence after he was convicted. A first-year criminology student who is now studying at Durham University, Griffiths denied the charges.
He claimed he was a 'shy, anxious and awkward' teenager who had clumsily approached the girl in an attempt 'to make a friend but the words didn't come out'. Griffiths is banned from contacting the victim for 12 months under the terms of a restraining order.
