The father of a Muslim-American soldier who was killed in the Iraq War delivered a passionate appeal last week at the Democratic National Convention for voters to support Hillary Clinton, accusing Republican nominee Donald Trump of sacrificing "nothing" and "smearing the character" of religious minorities like his family.
Donald Trump responded to the speech with a series of tweets. US Army Captain Humayun Khan was killed in a bomb blast in Iraq in 2004 and posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

His father, a 66-year-old immigration lawyer originally from Pakistan, tore into Mr Trump for his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the US, saying that under a Trump presidency, his son would never have been born in the country, let alone allowed to serve in its armed forces.
"Who wrote that? Did Hillary's script writers write it?" Trump said in an interview with with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that aired on Sunday. "I think I've made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard."
"I'd like to hear his wife say something," Trump said to the New York Times. "Donald Trump said that maybe I wasn't allowed to say anything. That is not true," she wrote in a Washington Post opinion piece, adding that she decided not to speak at the convention because of her pain over the 2004 death of her son. She still cannot look at pictures of her slain son without breaking down.
"When Donald Trump is talking about Islam, he is ignorant," she wrote.
"Donald Trump said he has made a lot of sacrifices. He doesn't know what the word sacrifice means."
