The Panama Papers released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists this Sunday unleashed a hailstorm of criticism in Pakistan, after it revealed a network of secret offshore accounts held by the rich and powerful.
More than 200 Pakistanis have been named in this list. Among the documents leaked from secretive Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca are details of shady dealings by famous figures from around the world. While offshore companies are not in themselves illegal, they are used for money laundering and tax evasion. Here is the Panama Papers leak explained.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been heavily implicated in the Panama Papers after Leaked documents show that three of Sharif's children were linked to offshore companies that owned properties in London, reports local media.
Pakistani newspaper The News and The Indian Express said Sharif's sons Hussain and Hasan, and his daughter Maryam, were linked to several offshore companies. Nawaz Sharif in reaction to the leak announced on Tuesday the formation of a commission to investigate allegations made in the so-called Panama Papers that linked his family to a series of offshore companies.
