A Filipino expat in the UAE was among the top 50 global educators, who were lauded for their unique teaching techniques and ability to motivate students to excel academically.
Dr. Rommel Pilapil Sergio, chair and associate professor of Human Resource Management Programme at the Canadian University Dubai, was one of the first recipients, honoured at the inaugural 2016 Oxford Journal Top Global Educators Award held recently at the University of Cambridge.
The Top 50 Global Educators in Business Award "recognises outstanding professors who demonstrate dedication to the success of their students, both inside and outside of the classroom."
"Facilitated by a pool of academic and research experts in the US, UK, and Asia, it is indeed an honour for a faculty like me to be recognised as one of the top global educators," Sergio told Khaleej Times.

Studies on economic meltdown, impulsive buying
(1) Untangling Organisational Strategies during Downturn: UAE cases
Focusing on the dominant strategies adhered by selected private companies during the 2009 economic downturn, the paper highlights the groundwork of the 15 large-scale private companies in the UAE in their operational achievements as turnaround after recession. Key findings pointed to four dominant strategic actions to cope with recession such as global talent pool, communication technologies, market competition, and manpower key functions enhancement.
(2) The Drivers of Impulsive Buying: Constructs, Perspectives, and Implications
The paper focuses on various factors that drive impulsive buying and why consumer behaviour is influenced by compelling impulse rather than thoughtful consideration. The paper also examines the characteristics exhibited by the market and explores specific factors that influence a consumer to make an impulsive purchase.
"From thousands of esteemed professors around the world, only 100 were shortlisted and 50 were finally selected. This citation motivates me to go the extra mile in teaching and in research. I will continue to innovate my classroom techniques and be active in research," he added.
Sergio presented his unique teaching techniques through documented class cases, simulations, learners' immersion through plant visits, student conference attendance and publication; among other teaching tools in business management.
His two papers (see the box) will be published soon in The Oxford Journal whose editorial board include faculty members from Harvard University, London School of Economics, Columbia University, University of Melbourne, and the National University of Singapore.
Sergio has more than 15 years of teaching experience in the areas of human resource management and organisational psychology.
He earned two doctoral degrees: PhD in Human Resource Management from Liverpool University and PhD in Psychology from De La Salle University, Philippines.
He also has post-doctoral bridge to Business in Management and Marketing Education conferred by Tulane University in New Orleans.
Other awardees are from University of South Carolina, University of Notre Dame, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Texas, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Westminster, and Afyon Kocatepe University in Turkey.
