UAE Seeks World Scrutiny on Israel’s Gaza Crimes

22 October 2009
NEW YORK — The UAE has urged the United Nations to act upon the Goldstone Report on Israel’s war crimes in Gaza and refer it to the International Criminal Court, reports Wam.

Expressing “total condemnation” of the crimes the report documents, Nasser Tahnoun Al Naqabi, member of the UAE delegation to the 64th session of the UN, called for the Israeli blockade of Gaza to be lifted.

He drew special attention, while addressing the Legal-Sixth Committee of the 64th session, to the report’s recommendation that the matter be referred to the international court.

The UAE was worried about Israel’s criminal breaches in Arab and Palestinian territories, particularly between December 2008 and January 2009, and the ravage they had caused to life and infrastructure, he said.

Inviting further scrutiny, he said those responsible be identified and be held accountable. The Sixth Committee was deliberating the Administration of Justice.

Despite great efforts by the UN and regional bodies in upholding the Rule of Law in administering justice, he said, violators often went scot free. He put it down to lack of appropriate will among other factors.

Underscoring UAE’s support for international laws and conventions on bilateral relations — partcularly the UN 2005 World Summit document — he called for greater global cooperation.
