Oman to Host Convention of Goans

11 October 2009
MUSCAT — Oman will be the venue of the international convention of Goans next month, according to an announcement here.

The Goan Community of Oman (GCO) said they expected some 250 delegates from all over the world to attend the event, to be held on November 5-6 at the Indian Embassy in Al Khuwair.

The ‘Global Goal Convention’ is organised by the Goan government in India to promote Goan art, culture and social interaction and to provide a platform for the Goan diaspora to unite. Previous conventions were held in Goa, Portugal and Canada.

The Oman event will be hosted under the auspices of Eduardo Faleiro, Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Goa, and Anil Wadhwa, the Indian Ambassador here. Most of the delegates attending the convention, to be held under the theme ‘The Gulf Goan’, will be Goans residing in the GCC countries.

Besides Faleiro and Wadhwa, the speakers will include S K Srivastva, Chief Secretary, Government of Goa, Ulhas Kamat, Director, NRI Affairs, Goa, Dr. Prajal Sakhardande, Professor of History and Heritage, Dhempe College, Dr. Rajendra Kerkar, noted environmentalist, and S.V. Pikale, advocate and industrialist.

A session on November 6 on ‘Domestic and Industrial Workers’ will provide an opportunity to Goan workers to voice their grievances for follow-up action by the Indian government.
