Wanted gangster killed

Rehan Siddiqui / 18 March 2013

KARACHI - Karachi police on Sunday claimed that a wanted gangster, Arshad Pappu, his brother and a close associate, were killed in the troubled neighbourhood of Lyari.

According to security agencies, the three were brutally tortured before being shot several times. Their bodies were later thrown near Brohi Chow in Lyari. The two other persons were identified as Yasir Arafat, brother of Arshad Pappu and an associate Shera Pathan.

The three alleged gangsters had terrorised the city especially the Lyari area and were wanted by the government. Arshad Pappu carried a head money of two million rupees and was wanted in dozens of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping cases.

Arshad Pappu was arrested in 2006 but was either released on bail or acquitted in more than 60 cases against him last year. He was kept at a jail in Balochistan.

Arshad Pappu was considered as one of the central characters of the Lyari gang war.

A large number of Arshad Pappu’s symphatisers took to the streets of Lyari after the incident and blocked police’s access to the area for hours before being dispersed by the law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, hundreds of traders blocked Super Highway, the main artery that connects Karachi to interior Sindh, for hours after one of their colleagues was killed in gunfire near the New Sabzimandi area in the early hours of Sunday.
