Over 1,300 tons of Garbage Collected During ‘Clean Up the World’ Campaign

DUBAI — More than 7,100 volunteers, including students from 42 private educational institutions in Dubai as well as employees of 108 private and government establishments, collected a total of 1,312 tons of waste on the third day of the ‘Clean Up the World’ campaign 2009.

The four-day campaign will conclude today with thousands of volunteers joining hands in cleaning up Nad Al Sheba area, in addition to a cleanliness programme by the Filipino community and employees of Dnata at Mamzar Beach.

On Thursday, 14 abandoned vehicles, including four heavy vehicles and 10 light vehicles, and a total of 20 pieces of bulk waste, including furniture, air conditioners and refrigerators, were removed from various locations. 

The first two days had seen volunteers removing 40 abandoned vehicles and 60 pieces of bulk waste from the city’s streets.

An educational exhibition organised at the Dubai Municipality headquarters on Wednesday and Thursday displayed environmentally-friendly shopping bags, degradable samples, fliers, brochures, DVDs and additive samples.  

A new initiative called Green Box Campaign was also organised to encourage municipality employees to donate unused electronic equipment, bags, office stationery and furniture.
