Diplomats Hail Choice of UAE as IRENA Headquarters

(Staff Reporters) / 30 June 2009

ABU DHABI - Diplomats in the UAE welcomed the choice to have the UAE as the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) which will be located in the Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City, the world’s only zero-carbon city. Alain Azouazou, the French Ambassador in Abu Dhabi said, “This is a wonderful success for Abu Dhabi.

It is the result of an intense campaign during the last month and a strong recognition for Abu Dhabi. France is a member of IRENA and we supported Abu Dhabi’s candidacy.”

The Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Talmiz Ahmed, said, “We wholeheartedly welcome the choice of the UAE as the headquarters of IRENA.  The UAE has been the vanguard of the international efforts to identify and develop new and renewable energy sources. India hopes to become a substantial partner in this endeavour to be led by the UAE in future’’.

Pakistan Ambassador to the UAE Khurshed Ahmed Junejo, said, “UAE’s win reflects its rising international influence and a great diplomatic triumph. Abu Dhabi had deserved this win, as the nation has become a leader in global renewable energy initiatives by allocating $20 billion of funds and taking concrete measures to move towards clean forms of energy. Pakistan had supported the UAE bid from the day one as the nation’s contribution towards renewable energy have been praise-worthy, which will encourage others nations to take it seriously. Abu Dhabi’s huge investment plans to finance the clean energy technologies and industries show its strong commitment,’’ the envoy said.

“Masdar City, the zero carbon city, is an ideal place to locate the headquarters of IRENA,” he added.

Matti Lassila, Finland Ambassador to the UAE said, “In my mind, it is a very good choice. We supported Abu Dhabi throughout the process. The UAE has good geographical location. The country sort of sustains the work that IRENA is doing in terms of renewable energy. With its natural energy resources, it has the local expertise to help out in the work of IRENA. It is good to have the headquarters outside the traditional sphere or region of bases for international organisations.”

Radomir Kosic, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the UAE, said, “Personally I am very happy. The UAE have invested a lot and they deserve it. I’m quite sure they will be the engine in the development of this field on the global level.” He added, “My country have supported the UAE by the vote and I’m sure that we shall continue the cooperation between the two countries in this field.” Cuong Nguyen Duc,  Incharge of Counsellor Affairs at the Vietnamese Embassy, said, “Vietnam has very cordial and growing relations with the UAE in all spheres of life. Vietnam has backed the UAE‘s rightful bid for the IRENA headquarters bid,  as the oil rich nation is committed to clean energy research and development. —
