 The Consulate-General of Sri Lanka in Dubai marked the nation's 68th Independence Day with an official function at its premises on Thursday.
The programme featured hoisting of the National Flag followed by the National Anthem, an oil lamp lighting ceremony, a moment of silence in memory of Sri Lanka's war heroes as well as a speech by the consul-general alongside representatives of different religions. Messages from the president, prime minister and the foreign minister were conveyed to the attendees.
The core message was distinct - reconciliation and integration of ethnic communities at home, and setting the foundation for the economic progress of the nation.
The island nation has much to celebrate as it strives to create a safe socio-political environment for its citizens. It has also been actively participating in a number of international events such as Gulfood, Arabian Travel Market and the World Economic Forum.
Last month, the new government launched a Mega City Structure Plan, an initiative to transform Sri Lanka into a higher income smart city by 2030. With this in mind, the country continues to reach out and strengthen its bonds with nations across the world.
The UAE is home to a large number of Sri Lankans. Bilateral relations between the UAE and Sri Lanka are growing, as latest records indicate a total trade value of $2 billion.
Charitha Yattogoda, consul-general of Sri Lanka, Dubai and Northern Emirates, told Khaleej Times: "As we celebrate our 68th Independence Day; we are marking a special day for all of us. There are about 250,000 Sri Lankans living happily here in the UAE, with a majority living in Dubai and Northern Emirates. They have been doing well in different positions in various organisations. In fact, they are contributing well. Sri Lanka enjoys very cordial and friendly relations with the UAE, which has allowed our citizens live here comfortably. I would like to wish our citizens a very Happy Independence Day."
