A company was slapped with Dh100,000 fine and its driver was held for dumping chemical waste near a building under construction in Sharjah.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Mohammed Al Kabi, Head of the Field Inspection Section at Sharjah Municipality said that an inspection team has seen a truck driver unloading barrels of used oil and other hazardous chemical waste and they caught him red-handed.
He added that the driver belongs to a company based in other emirate, has come all the way to Sharjah to dump the waste.
The chemical materials that he tried to dump could cause severe damage to the environment because it cannot be dissolved and considered flammable.
He added that the inspection teams are working around the clock to detect any kind of violations that affect the environment and public health.
He added that the truck driver chose to dump the material during the day time to avoid paying fees to concerned authority that handles disposal of chemical waste.
"The companies and factories operating in Sharjah, all have agreement with Beeah to help them get rid of the chemical waste in proper way in order to protect the environment. The driver came from other emirate to harm the environment here, thinking that he and his company will get away with their wrong doing.
Our inspection team is vigilant and can detect any kind of illegal practices and would not tolerate those who cause harm to environment and public health."
He added that the inspectors usually focus their inspection on remote and open areas like Al Sajjah, Al Seyouh, Al Rahmaniya, because violators prefer these areas to dump hazardous waste.
The Sharjah civic body has recently issued Dh 50,000 fine to a company that found to dump the construction waste in an open area. The inspector also confiscated their heavy trucks used in the illegal practices.
Ibrahim Al Rayees, Director of Inspection Department at Sharjah Municipality said that the civic body is making great efforts in spreading awareness about important of environment protection. The community members have been urged to contribute in curbing negative practices that affect security and stability by calling 993 to complaints of any harmful illegal practices.
He added the federal law no 24 of 1999 related to environment protection obliged the industrial establishments to follow the safety procedures in storing and get riding of hazardous chemicals and industrial waste to minimise pollution to ensure environment protection.

According to Sharjah Municipality regulations, dumping of chemical material and construction waste incur fine of Dh100, 000 and Dh50,000 respectively. The vehicle used to dump the hazardous substance will also be confiscated. The company will be shut down for repeated violations.
