Cooking relaxes me. At a very young age I would watch my grandmother cook in the kitchen and I started helping her.

Vikas KhannaChef, filmmaker, humanitarian, TV host – there isn’t much India’s Michelin-starred Vikas Khanna hasn’t tried his hand at, but brand ambassador was in fact an unexplored avenue for the 43-year-old when he visited Dubai on Sunday. We caught up with him for a chat as he promoted new restaurant Junoon at the Shangri-la Hotel.

What is your connection with Junoon Dubai?

I have worked with the team since 2010 when we launched Junoon in New York. The restaurant has become a huge success, gaining four consecutive Michelin stars. Over the years I have been lucky enough to take part in various projects outside of Junoon and as time went on it made sense for me to take on more of an ambassador’s role for Junoon.

Can you tell us anything further about the planned biopic recently mentioned in the news?

It’s a bit too early to get into details on this. I was approached and I gave my consent and now it is in the planning stage.

With so many strings to your bow, is it difficult to keep on top of everything?

Whatever I do is with the help of a great team. Hence it is possible to be involved in various activities. Everything that I do is based on the cuisine and culture of India. I love to document this through literature.

What do you eat to keep up with your busy schedule?

I am a small eater and I enjoy anything which is home cooked. My choice is mostly vegetarian.

What dish most excites you at Junoon?

It would depend on what I crave that day. But mostly I end up eating dal and rice.

What is it about cooking that most interests you?

Cooking relaxes me. At a very young age I would watch my grandmother cook in the kitchen and I started helping her.

Are you planning on making any more films yourself? Would Junoon be a good subject?

Yes definitely. I would like to finish the Holy Kitchen series. Junoon would be an excellent subject. We are already working on a book of Junoon, documenting the journey of its founder Rajesh Bhardwaj in New York - how we both met in the early years and worked together in creating it, and how the Indian diaspora embraced it and made it the landmark it has become.
