7 November 2009 This week’s theme for City Unwind is chiselled good looks. You can’t go far wrong with that, can you?
Movie Mania:
Demolition Man (1993)
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock
Simon has never been the most threatening sounding name — on a par with Julian or Trevor for inducing fear.
Add to the fact that in Demolition Man, the Simon Phoenix character wears dungarees and races around with a hyperactive grin, and admittedly we don’t have the best ingredients for a menacing baddie.
But Wesley Snipes conquers the film with his portrayal of a carefree psychopath, frozen in 1996 then released to wreak havoc on a harmonious future.
Out to stop him is Sergeant John Spartan (Stallone), another inmate of the ‘CryoPrison’, who also has to contend with the bland and crime-free ‘San Angeles’ of 2032.
CGI-tastic, humorous and unashamedly silly, Demolition Man remains an excellent popcorn flick for those who wish to disengage their brain for a couple of hours at the weekend.
Love Connection:
Clive Owen & Mel B
CLIVE AND MEL both know how to mix sexiness with scariness.
Sure, she may be a bit louder and brasher, whereas he prefers the quiet but deadly screen persona, but you wouldn’t want to meet either down a dark alley.
We think their chalk and cheese styles of glamorous menace would work wonders should the pair actually meet. Sure, the conversation may be a bit one-sided, but we get the sense it would be whichever foxy lady was sitting opposite the taciturn Closer star.
Celeb Trivia:
Before becoming the biggest star in Hollywood, Brad Pitt had a string of grinding jobs to help sustain himself as a wannabe actor.
After leaving the University of Missouri weeks before graduating to relocate to Los Angeles, Pitt paid for acting classes by dressing as a chicken to give out fliers on the street for Mexican restaurant El Pollo Loco.
Other brief money-spinners also included handing out cigarette samples and working as a chauffeur, driving strippers to bachelor parties.
In an interview with People magazine, Pitt later revealed that being a chauffeur was “very depressing”. However, he also credited the job with changing his life, after one of the girls put him in touch with famous acting coach Roy London, who would become an important mentor.
