AS PART OF its "Because We Care" social responsibility initiative the Sharjah Museums Department (SMD), along with the Sharjah Aquarium, will host The Marine Environment Clean-Up from today to February 2. Following last year's successful beach clean-up on the shoreline around Al Mamzar Beach, teams of dedicated scuba divers will head below the waves in a competition to remove the most waste from the sea off Sharjah's coastline.
This year, professional divers from Sharjah Rescue Unit, Sharjah Aquarium, scuba clubs in the UAE, and licensed volunteer divers will go head-to head to remove seabed litter and discarded waste from Sharjah's Khaled Lagoon. Discarded waste will be brought onshore alongside the heaviest item where the litter will get weighed by Environment Management Company (Bee'ah) and then turned into a piece of artwork by a free artist, Shamim. The diver who gets the heaviest item out of the water will win the first place in the closing ceremony of the event.
The event is part of Sharjah Aquarium's message to the community about the importance of preserving the biodiversity of the UAE's marine environments.
