Ranveer Singh has revealed that his Bajirao Mastani co-star Priyanka Chopra was earlier not keen on being a part of the film.
In the magnum opus directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ranveer is playing Peshwa Bajirao, while Priyanka is essaying the role of his first wife Kashibai whereas Deepika Padukone is Mastani.
"She (Priyanka) did not want to do the film... she had said she wants to go. She said you all are mad.. you are doing a second film (with Sanjay Leela Bhansali). But she is a fast learner... and got things quickly," Ranveer told reporters at the trailer launch of the film in Mumbai. Bhansali had earlier directed both Ranveer and Deepika in Ram Leela.
Ranveer said that Bajirao Mastani has been emotionally and mentally draining for him. "When I first heard the script, I knew it would be the most challenging film of my career. We did all the hard work required. I did a lot of preparation for the film... we have been working on this film since a year and a half," he said. "It has been emotionally, physically and mentally draining but at the same time it is fulfilling and enriching. I have grown as an artiste and I would like to give credit to Sanjay sir. He makes me a better actor and a wiser person. I hope I rise upto the expectations," he added.
Meanwhile, Priyanka says the cast and crew of her international TV series Quantico are excited about her period drama.
"There is a lot of excitement for Bajirao Mastani here. My entire cast and crew is going to have a special screening. They want clothes from the film and they're very excited," Priyanka said from the US through video conferencing during the trailer launch.
"We were trending (on social media) in the US all day even before the trailer came out. This is a part of history, but it is Sanjay sir's fictional version of the story of Bajirao and Mastani. It'd be wonderful to see how people respond to it internationally," she said. Priyanka is in the US shooting for the series where she plays Alex Parrish, an FBI agent.
When asked how she managed to handle two completely different and difficult projects at the same time, she said, "It's my job as a actor to be able to differentiate between my characters and over the years I've been able to learn to slip in and out of characters." PTI, IANS
