AS HILARIOUS AS IT sounds, as innocent as it gets, as funny as you expect, Adi Kapyaare Koottamani, directed by John Varghese comes with zilch pretensions.
It is a fun film for the youth, by the youth and of the youth - as democratic as you get when it comes to youth flicks.
With Dhyan Sreenivasan, Aju Varghese, Neeraj Madhav and Namitha Pramod, the film takes its name from a colloquial expression.
With senior actor Mukesh playing the warden of a strict boys' hostel, the name draws on the 'catastrophe' - that befalls some residents. Breaking all conventions, they have a girl in the hostel and they must find ways to ensure that she gets out without the warden's knowledge.
The frivolous one-liner, indeed, sets the pace for the movie that has become a runaway hit in Kerala fighting against the biggies. Its success shows an emerging trend in the Malayalam film industry perfected by Vineeth Sreenivasan and Nivin Pauly et al.
Make movies for the primary audience - the youth - and chances are you are going to laugh all the way to the banks. Let us not get too critical with these works either; many such movies in the genre have little quality or class than an amateurish short film but at the box office, they work.
With a number of one-line punch lines strewn across the narrative, some hilarious situations that connects best with the youth, and an even keel of story-telling, these films, however, come rich in technical craft. Adi Kapyaare Koottamani is no exception.
Beautifully shot, despite the crammed ambience of a boys' hostel, the film has foot-tapping music that is made for the youth.
Dhyaan Sreenivasan gets another shot at success with Adi Kapyaare Koottamani, having earlier recorded box office success in Kunjiramayanam, where he had teamed up with almost the same cast and his brother Vineeth playing the central character.
With effortless comic timing by Neeraj Madhav and Aju Varghese, the film assures you some mindless fun without stooping to vulgarity, even when there is ample opportunity to do so.
