Empower, the Dubai-based district cooling provider, is playing a critical role in disseminating sustainability solutions and district cooling technology in line with the vision of the UAE in making the world a better place to live, Ahmad bin Shafar, CEO of the company said.

The company, which has participated at a special recognition meeting for the United Nations Energy Programme's (UNEP) District Energy in Cities initiative on the sidelines of the 107th Idea annual conference and trade show, has been recognised as a major partner of the initiative.

Since the launch of the District Energy in Cities initiative, Empower has made remarkable contributions in achieving the goals of spreading district cooling technology in many developing countries such as India, China, Chile, Morocco and Serbia, said bin Shafar.

The company is also playing a major role in increasing environmental awareness and energy consumption conservation practices that will help in sustainable development.

The UNEP's special recognition ceremony was attended by Rob Thornton, president and CEO of International District Energy Association (Idea), and Lily Riahi, advisor, UNEP DES initiative, among other prominent US and international experts.

The ceremony showcased a series of achievements in countries and best practices in district cooling and energy management in cities around the world. It also discussed next steps in implementing energy management practices and ways of increasing awareness of its benefits.

"Empower greatly contributed in disseminating sustainability solutions and district cooling technology as part of Dubai's relentless efforts in this regard. We look forward for more cooperation as we support developing countries in enhancing their district cooling infrastructure to go in line with UNEP vision and practices," said bin Shafar.

"Empower is a partner to UNEP's DES programme since its beginning, and by this involvement, Empower is spreading the vision of our visionary leaders, of making the world a better place to live. Based on these principles, we have gone a long way in transferring district cooling technologies and sustainability solutions as well as energy management systems to other parts of the world," bin Shafar added.

Guests and speakers commended Empower's involvement in the DES initiative. Also, at the function, Champion City recognition was given to Chris Coleman, the Mayor of St Paul.
