Several flights between the UAE and Istanbul - including two from Emirates Airlines and two from Etihad Airways - were cancelled in the wake of the devastating terror attack at Ataturk Airport.

The two cancelled Emirates flights were flight EK121, which was scheduled to depart Dubai at 2:15 PM and arrive in Instanbul at 5:55 PM on Wednesday, and flight EK122, which was scheduled to depart Istanbul at 7:25 PM and arrive in Dubai at 1 AM

An Emirates spokesperson said on Wednesday that all passengers booked on these flights had the option to transfer to the airline's services between Dubai and Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (EK119 and EK120) on Wednesday

"We are monitoring the situation in Istanbul closely. The safety of our passengers, crew and staff is always our top priority and will not be compromised," the spokesperson added.

Additionally, Etihad cancelled flight EY97, which was scheduled to depart Abu Dhabi at 8:30 AM and arrive at 12:45 PM, and EY96, which was scheduled to depart Istanbul at 2:15 PM and arrive in Abu Dhabi at 8:15 PM

An Etihad spokesperson noted that passengers booked to travel to and from Istanbul have the options of a free-of-charge move to another travel date on or before July 10 in the original class booking, or in the next available class if the original class booking is not available. Additionally, in this instance change fees were waived, with the exception of passengers who have already been re-routed via an alternative airport, who may now make an additional change back to or from Istanbul - subject to availability - at no additional charge.

The Etihad spokesperson added that for partially used and fully unutilised tickets, re-routing to either Athens, Larnaca or Istanbul (Sabiha Gökçen Airport) is permitted free of charge in the same cabin, effective until 10 July 2016.

"The airline is providing all necessary assistance to passengers who may miss their connecting flights as a result of this event and advising them of itinerary changes," the spokesperson said.

Turkish Airlines flight TK762, which was scheduled to depart Istanbul at 1:15 AM and arrive in Dubai at 6:35 AM, was also cancelled.

Both Flydubai and AirArabia operate out of Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, which was unaffected by the attack.

Ataturk Airport - the third largest in Europe - was reopened just hours after the attacks.
