The German Consulate General in Dubai announced joining Car Free Day through riding an electric car. Gunter Rauer said the consulate included an e-car in our fleet of official cars.
"Now, the Dubai Government has started an initiative on e-mobility. In my opinion, especially against the background of local habits of driving cars, this initiative needs incentives for consumers to get off the ground."
He mentioned some examples including waiving off Salik charges, reduction of electricity fees for households with an e-car and e-car loading station and reduction or elimination of Value Added Tax on electric cars, once it is introduced within the GCC.
The Car Free Day has seen the participation of other private entities including the chauffer driven car booking service Careem where employees carpooled to minimise the number of cars on the road.
